The species change with the seasons, but there is never a month when some pest is not actively looking for food, warmth, or shelter in or around your property.

Spring: the season of new activity

As temperatures rise from March onwards, overwintering pests become active again. Queen wasps emerge from hibernation and begin building new nests. Ant colonies that have been dormant through winter restart foraging activity, often appearing in kitchens and food storage areas. Rodents that moved indoors in autumn may now be well-established, with breeding populations already in place.

Spring is also when bird nesting activity peaks. Gulls, pigeons, and starlings begin occupying ledges, rooftops, and gutters. Once nesting is underway, birds are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, so proofing must be carried out before nesting begins or after the season ends.

Summer: peak season for flying insects

Summer brings the highest volume of pest calls in Scotland. Wasp nests reach their maximum size in July and August, with colonies of several thousand workers. Ants swarm on warm, humid days, which can cause alarm even when the infestation is relatively minor. Flies become a significant issue for food businesses and households alike.

Fleas are also more active in summer. Flea larvae develop faster in warm conditions, and the combination of warm weather and increased pet activity outdoors means infestations can establish quickly. If your pet has been scratching more than usual, a flea treatment is worth considering.

Autumn: the rodent season begins

September and October mark the start of the most important period for rodent control. As outdoor temperatures drop, rats and mice begin actively seeking warmth and food inside buildings. Properties that have not been proofed are particularly vulnerable. Cluster flies also begin entering loft spaces and wall cavities in autumn, gathering in large numbers to overwinter.

Wasp activity declines through October as colonies die off, but late-season wasps can be more aggressive as the colony breaks down and food sources become scarce.

Winter: indoor pests remain active

Rodents that moved indoors in autumn remain active throughout winter, breeding and causing damage. Cockroaches, which thrive in warm, humid environments, are a year-round concern for commercial kitchens and food businesses. Bed bugs are entirely unaffected by cold weather and continue to feed and reproduce regardless of the season.
