Effective rodent proofing uses materials that rodents cannot chew through:

• Wire wool: packed tightly into gaps around pipes and cables. Rodents will not chew through it. Always used in conjunction with a sealant to hold it in place.
• Exterior-grade filler or expanding foam: used over wire wool to create a durable, weatherproof seal. Foam alone is not sufficient as rodents can chew through it.
• Metal kick plates and door brushes: fitted to the base of external doors to close the gap that mice can exploit.
• Fine wire mesh: used to cover air bricks and ventilation grilles, maintaining airflow while excluding rodents.
• Metal flashing: used around roof edges and chimney stacks to prevent rats from gaining access to loft spaces.

Professional treatment options

When rodents are already inside, professional treatment is the most reliable approach. The main options are:

• Rodenticide bait stations: tamper-resistant bait stations placed in locations where rodents are active. Bait is replaced and activity monitored on follow-up visits until the infestation is eliminated.
• Trapping: used where rodenticide is not appropriate, such as in food preparation areas or where there is a risk of secondary poisoning to pets or wildlife. Traps require more frequent monitoring.
• Tracking dust: used to identify rodent runways and confirm the extent of activity before and during treatment.
